Slippery Elm is a tree native to North America and Canada.
The plant's leaves are long and green and darken in color during fall.
The inside of the bark is collected from trees that are at least 10 years old, and then dried and sprayed for therapeutic use.
Slippery Elm bark has been used as an herbal remedy in North America for centuries.
Traditionally, Native Americans used it to treat and soothe ulcers and wounds in general.
It is also used for skin inflammation, sore throat and to soothe an irritated digestive system, one of its main uses these days.
Elm contains mucilage, a substance that becomes a smooth gel when mixed with water.
This gel soothes the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines and helps to lubricate and regenerate the inner lining from the mouth to the end of the intestine.
There are reports that American singers and actresses in the last century used elm gel as a tonic to restore and strengthen the vocal cords after the wear and tear of the shows.
It also contains antioxidants that help relieve inflammatory bowel conditions.
Slippery Elm also causes a reflux stimulation of nerve endings in the gastrointestinal tract which leads to an increase in mucus secretion.
Increased mucus production can protect the gastrointestinal tract from ulcers and excess acidity.
In naturopathy, elm is suggested for the following conditions: sore throat, heartburn, cough, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, wounds, burns, boils, psoriasis, and other skin conditions (external).
Mix ½ to 1 teaspoon in a glass of water.
Stir and let it rest for about 3 to 5 minutes until a thicker gel is formed, at which point stir again better and then it can be drunk calmly.
Recipe example with Elm - Anti-inflammatory tea:
Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons of elm powder in 500ml of hot water, if you wish you can add turmeric powder and/or ginger powder and let it rest for 3 to 5 minutes for a gel to develop,
It's ready, you can drink a glass and save the rest to drink later.

Just Vegan is an independent web store bringing vegan affordable goods to people and other animals all over the world.
We're always searching for products that are best for your health, less damaging for the environment and more ethical.
As an independent store we have no ties with any brands and will dynamically continue to replace products by others that are better and offer further ethical and environmental advances. This fits with our no compromise policy.
We welcome all your feedback, including warning us of any mistake or lack of information on the website and informing us of any ethical issues with a company or product we sell.
How we choose the products we sell:
* Must be vegan and as such not tested on animals
* Foods must not have hydrogenated fat or palm even if organic and RSPO certified. Although we reject palmitic acid based soaps, some personal hygiene and cosmetic products may have palm derivatives as the quantities are usually minimal and it's a difficult task to know if some ingredients are palm derived or not
Products without the "Palm free" label don't necessarily contain a palm derivative. It might be the case that we still haven't found out if any of the ingredients is derived from palm.
* Preference for organic
* Less sugars, mainly cane sugar
* Preference for social responsibility certified, like Fairtrade
* Less food miles
* Less packaging
With all these attributes being considered we take into account the opinion of our customers about the products' taste and performance.
