Saw Palmetto is a yellow berry from a genus of palm tree that has toothed green leaves and white flowers.
It is used in various ways in traditional herbal medicine.
Berries turn black and brown when ripe and are dried for medicinal use.
Native American Indians used the berry in their food and to treat various problems in the urinary and reproductive systems.
The Mayans drank a tonic made from their juice and the Seminoles used the berries as an expectorant and antiseptic.
Today, Saw Palmetto's primary use is to treat symptoms of an enlarged prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland.
Studies have shown that it can reduce the need to urinate at night and improve urine flow and relieve pain when urinating.
Saw Palmetto contains phytochemicals that affect the level of testosterone in the body and reduce the amount of an enzyme that promotes prostate cell growth.
Saw Palmetto is often combined with nettle extract to treat BPH. It is the most popular herbal treatment for this condition and over two million American men use Saw Palmetto for the prostate.
The active compounds in Saw Palmetto include fatty acids, plant sterols and flavonoids.
Berries also contain polysaccharides that can reduce inflammation and strengthen the immune system
